My son, who works for MS in Reading, made the same “may be the graphic memory” suggestion (and then went off on holiday!). My thanks for your replies, but especially to John Brown whose suggestion may well be the answer. This may or may not affect the problem, but it’s worth a try. Obviously, hardware problems are harder to deal with, but since you probably have an on-board video you may be able to go into the CMOS and change the amount of memory assigned to the card. If it is a hardware issue, you may also see other indications of “artifacts” in other places not so obvious.
